For most of us, the holidays are a time to gather with friends and family. This really is the season for relationship and connection. You may not have seen some of your relatives since this time last year, and you may be grateful for that. Time with family can be hectic and stressful, and sometimes we stir up old wounds when we get together. Regardless of your history and family dynamics, it’s important to make some new memories now. This year, put down the cell phone, or whatever you use to distract yourself, and make a connection with your loved ones.

Have you ever noticed how tough it is to let go of technology, even for a little while? We’ve got to get pictures. We need photos with Santa, Grandma, by the tree and with the dog. We need videos of everyone unwrapping presents or lighting the candles on the Menorah. We need to upload, update, post, tweet and text. Someone is creating a meme, right now, of holiday food and bad sweaters.

What does our dependence on technology cost us? We miss the most precious moments. We get so busy talking about what we’re doing, we forget to connect with what’s right in front of us in that moment-our thoughts, feelings, and immediate experiences. As long as we are behind a lens or fixated on a screen, we’re can’t be present to the people we’re with. We’re disconnected from the very experience we’ve been working so hard to prepare for and are working so hard to document.

When we extend ourselves and relate to others, our lives become richer and deeper. Sure, there are annoying moments, but Uncle Joe and all his old jokes won’t be around forever. Tune in and enjoy your family. Listen to their stories as you smell the pie in the oven. Laugh with each other. Savor this time, because you’re creating tomorrow’s memories right now. Unplug, reconnect, and have fun.

How will you put down the phone and reconnect this year? Please share your comments. They make a difference for all of us.
