With so much going on in our lives—work, family, significant other, motherhood, fatherhood, and so much more—it can be difficult to carve out a chunk of time to meditate or de-stress. Even though we don’t often think so, most of us can find five minutes. The baby is asleep, and I know you have a million things to get done, but you can find just five minutes. You have young children running around, thousands of details to take care of, but if you’d stop the running for just 5 minutes your life could feel different. You’re at work in your office or cubicle with too many projects to complete, but you can close the door of your office or take a break for five minutes.
Most of us know that five minutes isn’t what they suggest to really change life-long mental or emotional patterns, but it’s a start and can be a way to begin to shift your nervous system and change your brain. In that five minutes you can choose to sit quietly, breathe, and be with yourself, be with your inner life, your thoughts and feelings, and maybe even journal for a moment.
Really, we have many, many five minutes in our lives, for example, standing in line at the bank, in the grocery store, or when we’re in traffic. You want to eventually be able to find that quiet place within, even when there's noise around you. Noise is part of life. But even when life is busy and noisy, there's always a deep silence inside of us.
That five minutes starts to build up our inner muscles, our meditation muscles. Then eventually that five minutes feels so darn good or is so helpful, we want to do 10 minutes. And then 20 minutes.
Please allow yourself to take five minutes… let me know how it goes…
