Through meditation we’re creating space inside of ourselves, space that contains everything. We are moving toward connecting to that inner part that is constantly quiet and relaxed, open and receptive. With practice you can begin to experience this no matter where you’re meditating. All you have to do is close your eyes and your inner life is there. Your inner stillness is there.
Yet it can also be helpful to have a space dedicated to meditation in your home. This is a place that’s quiet and uncluttered, where you’re not likely to be disturbed unless you’re really needed. When you’re able to create a space that’s used only for meditation, just walking into that area helps you begin to relax and connect with that quiet inner space.
Depending on the size of your meditation area, it can be as simple as a place to sit, and perhaps a picture on the wall that inspires or relaxes you—whether it’s a picture of a religious figure, a symbol that has deep meaning for you, an inspiring quote, or a landscape that gives you a sense of spaciousness.
If you have more room, you might include a small table where you can create an altar with items that inspire you or that will enhance your meditation, such as a small statue of a religious figure or symbol for you to focus on, a candle or incense that you can light, or something that you can hold or wear during you meditation, such as a crystal or a meditation shawl.
Let me know how creating your own space goes.
