As I was thinking about what is means to begin a New Year and how that brings with it the opportunity for a new start, it occurred to me that these three C's could be a support for our start in this New Year.

The first c is for courage. Courage comes from the French word relating to the heart and connects to bravery, valor, pushing ahead in spite of fear and doing things anyway. According to Webster’s dictionary, it is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere and withstand danger, fear or difficulty.

This year we invoke the courage to:

  • face life and what is present as it arises
  • set goals
  • feel our feelings
  • notice our thoughts and beliefs
  • see our family member's age
  • see ourselves age
  • embrace our failures
  • celebrate our victories
  • shovel snow
  • watch the ocean knowing that we are like the ocean … meaning everything, including us, comes and goes.
  • (please fill in more for yourself)

This list could go on and on depending how you look at it.

Constancy is determination, persistence and being like a dog with a bone. According to Webster’s dictionary, is a steadfastness of mind under duress or another word for it is fortitude.

This year we invoke our constancy or “stick -to-it-ness" to:

  • (I’d like for you to fill in this space with your top 10 goals for the New Year and let me know what they are …)

Compassion is a deeper fuller heart-felt understanding. It’s the ability to bear the suffering of others, the desire to help others in stress, the openness to show and feel empathy for yourself and others. Compassion holds us as we come forth in our in our constancy and our courage. It is the container for us while we face our successes and our difficulties.

This year we invoke our compassion toward ourselves and others. We will open to our warmth in all areas of our lives and relationships including:

  • (I’d like for you to fill this in for yourself and let me know what you came up with …)

Personally, I’m open to having my very best year yet. This includes all the exciting things on the docket like having that new book agent and then getting published, being part of a new movie, continued success with the radio show, as well as all the human victories and difficulties that reveal themselves along the way.

Here’s to all of us living from who we truly are in 2011. Please leave your comments below.

Dr. Jennifer,

Personally, I would add a fourth C: Creativity, which adds spice to life, helps us see alternatives and solutions, and is simply boat loads of fun.

May 2011 be your, as well as our, best year EVER!!!

It''s interesting to see this point of view. I can''t say fore sure if I agree or not, but it is something I will think about now.
