‘Thatness’, the essence of a thing; a principle of nature. Tattvas are the fundamental realities or categories on which a system of thought is built. Different schools of philosophy define different tattvas: Jainism identifies nine tattvas on which it is built, Samkhya ahs twenty-five, and Shaivism identifies thirty-six.
