Sanskrit, meaning “that which is remembered.” In Hindu tradition, this is the written material that comprises the laws, histories, doctrine, and writings that were compiled after the Vedas were inscribed. They are works that are “remembered” by the religious practitioners who set them down, as opposed to the shruti which is truth “revealed” to the sages and written in the form of the Vedas. See Shruti
