“Original form” (pra meaning beginning or source, and kruthi meaning to form) The original, inert substance of the universe from which the entire world arose. In Sankhya, the Indian system of philosophy, prakriti is the material world, in contrast to purusha, pure consciousness. In Ayurvedic medicine, disease occurs when there is a change in a person’s prakriti, or form, on either a physiological or psychological level. See Ayurveda, Purusha
