sound-symbol of Totality, a sacred and mystical Sanskrit word in which the metaphysical vision of Hinduism, with its different levels of being, is encapsulated. It is the sole subject of the one of the shortest Upanishads, the twelve-verse Mândűkya Upanishad. It explains that the letters of “A”, “U”, and “M” correspondence to the states of waking, dreaming, and sleeping, and the fourth state of illumination. In Hindu tradition, it is seen as the primordial sound from which the universe came forth.
