In Hinduism, the kalpa is defined as a great cycle of time, measured in millions and billions of years, during which the universe comes into being and exists, then returns to its original state. One kalpa equals 1,000 mahayugas or 4 billion, 320 million years. Buddhism identifies the kalpa as a large unit of the measurement of time, for example a regular kalpa equals 16 million years.
