In Buddhist teaching, these four truths were an understanding reached by Gautama Buddha while meditating under the bodhi tree by the Neranjana River in Bodhgaya, Bihar in northeast India. The Buddha stated that these truths were fundamental to life and they are believed to have been his first teachings after achieving enlightenment. The Four Noble Truths are:
1. There is suffering (Dukkha).
2. There is a cause to suffering (Samudaya).
3. There is an end to suffering (Nirodha)
4. The is a path out of suffering (Marga).
