A school of therapy developed by Aaron Beck in the1960’s, based upon the theories of Albert Ellis. Cognitive therapy asserts that understanding our cognitive process - our perception, interpretation and the meaning we attribute to something – is the key to successful therapy. Beck believed that the way that we process information about anything, ourselves or the world, is what causes our behaviors. Cognitive therapy is collaborative, meaning that the client and therapist have an equal responsibility and involvement in the client’s growth and resolution of issues. Cognitive therapy is directive and structured.
