A school of therapy developed in the 1950’s that has developed into a number of different systems. Cognitive behavior therapy was pioneered by psychotherapist Albert Ellis in the early 1950’s, with the system that became known as Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). Cognitive-behavioral therapy is based on the idea that our feelings and behaviors are direct reactions to our thoughts about people or events, rather than directly caused by the people, situations, or events themselves.
