Bodhissata

(Bodhi, meaning “awake” or “enlightened”, and Satta, meaning “one who is.” ) A person who is close to or on the path toward enlightenment; Prior to his enlightenment, Gautama Buddha was a bodhisatta. “…the term can be separated into two parts, bodhi and sattva: bodhi from the root budh, to be awake, meaning 'awakening' or 'enlightenment', and 'sattva' derived from sant, the verb 'to be', meaning…literally, 'one who is', 'a sentient being.'
